Pretty exhausted, they returned to Göttingen on Monday night from their four-day trip to Cologne and Lexeuil-les-Bains in eastern France.
Göttingen – The Bundesliga basketball players from BG Göttingen had two bitter test match defeats in their luggage: once with 32 points against BBL competitor Heidelberg, who many experts consider to be very strong for the coming season, and once with 40 points against Dijon (France ) lost.
“That wasn’t the best,” admitted Violet returnee Philipp Hartwich, who turned 28 on Monday.
However, the people of Göttingen don’t have much time to process the situation, which is certainly necessary. The sixth and penultimate, non-public test will take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the nearest league competitor Löwen Braunschweig, before the current preparation program is completed on Wednesday, September 20th in the “Sartorius Lab” against Hubo Limburg United. This game is also not open to the public, so the vast majority of BG fans won’t get to see their team once during this test phase – something that never happened before in the Bundesliga and second division times. The first inspection is the first Bundesliga home game against Crailsheim on October 7th (6.30 p.m.).
If the fans want to see the BG with their own eyes beforehand, they would have to fly to Belek (Turkey) for the first Champions League qualifying game against Heroes Den Bosch (Netherlands) on September 27th – an expensive pleasure.
Back to current events: The tour to France was “difficult,” says center Philipp Hartwich, who was only brought back from Würzburg last week. “But maybe that was the shared experience that brought us together.” His team only performed at 50 percent, is how he classifies the two games. In addition, the referees didn’t exactly give them an advantage.
“Our top priority is that the boys get healthy, that Deondre Burns, Fedor Zugic and Harper Kamp come back as soon as possible and that we can get some rest,” said coach Oliver Foucart after the games in France. “The trip we took at the weekend with all the changes took a lot of energy. We have to find solutions, keep working and make things more precise. Games like this are painful, no one wants to experience that. But it’s good that this is happening to us now and not during the season.” Burns and Zugic are scheduled to play in Braunschweig today, with Foucart giving the players Thursday and Friday off.
Strong lion performance
The Braunschweigers celebrated a spectacular opening event of the season: First they broadcast the German victory in the World Cup final in the Volkswagen Hall, then the Lions only lost the test against Alba Berlin with a three-pointer from Alba newcomer Sterling Brown (21 points) with 89:90 (41:41). The best Lion throwers were TJ Crockett 20, Amar Sylla 16, Jilson Bango 13 and Ahmaad Rorie 10. (haz/gsd-nh)
