Service to the public and sustainable management are the two strong axes of the union.
In the premises of the intercommunal union for the collection and treatment of household waste (Sictom) Pézenas-Agde, whose headquarters are located in Nézignan-l’Évêque, the coming months will be punctuated by new projects.
Starting with the construction file for a brand new sorting center in Saint-Thibéry. “It will replace the Pézenas and Villeveyrac sites”, announces Sébastien Frey, president of the structure for a few months now.
An investment of around twenty million euros, for equipment that will take place on land in the Roches Bleues quarry, in a place that will no longer be operated by the company. Sictom, which today encompasses 58 Hérault municipalities, has managed to federate seven EPCIs (public inter-municipal cooperation establishment) behind this sorting center project.
A new sorting center, with 45 jobs at stake
Clearly, 30,000 tonnes from the yellow bins of this large territory will be treated in 2023 on this new site. In return, of course, all these little people will bribe to finance the equipment.
Local authorities of course, but also the State, the Occitanie Region and undoubtedly Europe, a dossier having been submitted in this regard. Ultimately, 45 jobs will be created.
This sorting center will further complement the now virtuous system of Sictom. We remember that for many years, from Agde to Pézenas, we were forced to export our waste to landfills located in neighboring regions, in particular the Bouches-du-Rhône.
A period that is fortunately over, since the commissioning, in 2019, of Valohé, the household waste treatment unit, built in Montblanc. “This is also why we are regularly taken as an example”, assures Sébastien Frey. “Especially since we manage to do it within a contained budgetary framework.”
260 € per tax household
Out of an operating budget of around thirty million euros per year, the household waste collection tax (TEOM) represents around three-quarters of Sictom’s revenue. An important lever, therefore, that you have to know how to operate sparingly.
For a city like Agde alone, 12 million euros are collected each year, for an average of 260 € per tax household (and not 724 € for an average home).
A mandatory direct debit, “which is in the departmental average”, notes the president of Sictom, who ensures that this tax “will not increase”, despite the construction of the new sorting center.
Recycling centers: increased attendance
“The number of visitors to our 19 recycling centers is up 3% every year,” said Sictom Pézenas-Agde president Sébastien Frey. “It’s encouraging, we are seeing positive developments in the region.” The example of collecting glass speaks for itself. While the Hérault is one of the good students with 32.8 kg recycled per inhabitant, as specified in our edition of Monday, January 25, the Sictom territory shows 41 kg per inhabitant. Awareness of sorting and the multiplication of drop-off points obviously have a lot to do with this assessment.
