Bite Latvija, a major Latvian telecommunications provider, is making a important investment in its network infrastructure, signaling a major push into the next generation of wireless technology. The company is committing approximately $22 million (20 million euros) in 2025 to expand its 5G+ network, bringing ultra-fast internet access to homes and businesses across the country.
This substantial investment will not only enhance existing services but also introduce 5G+ capabilities, promising substantially faster download and upload speeds, and reduced latency. The upgrade will benefit both residential and commercial customers, impacting everything from streaming video to online gaming and even supporting the advancement of future technologies like autonomous vehicles.
“This year, Bite celebrates 20 years of operation in latvia – during these years, a strong and modern next-generation mobile communications network and high-speed optical internet infrastructure have been created. Our accumulated experience will be the basis for the further growth of the company, and one of the most important events of this year will be the introduction of 5G+ Internet for households and businesses in a strategic partnership with Nokia. These improvements will allow users to sync cloud storage faster, improve the quality of video calls and online gaming experiences, and open up new opportunities for future technologies such as autonomous vehicles. Namely, the 5G+ capabilities provide Internet download speed above 1 Gb/s, 50% higher upload speed and reduced data transmission delay to less than 10 ms,” explains Arunas Mickevicius, general director of Bite Latvija.
The expansion plan includes the construction of 60 new 5G base stations in previously unserved areas,as well as the modernization of 210 existing base stations using cutting-edge Ericsson technology. By the end of 2025, Bite Latvija aims to have a total of 1,160 base stations, with 836 supporting 5G. This expansion will cover major cities like Riga, Ventspils, and Jelgava, and also smaller towns and rural areas, ensuring widespread coverage across the country. The company is also focusing on improving coverage along major highways.
Beyond the 5G+ rollout, Bite Latvija is also modernizing its optical network, boosting internet speeds to 1 Gbps in areas previously lacking such high-speed access. This thorough approach underscores the company’s commitment to providing a robust and reliable digital infrastructure for its customers.
Mickevicius further highlighted the surging demand for high-speed internet. “This clearly demonstrates the growing demand for fast and stable Internet in the private, business and public sectors. Thus, in 2025, using 5G power, we will devote significant attention to the improvement of Bites services, continuing to offer customers the highest quality basic services, i.e., voice, mobile and optical Internet, as well as TV services, combined in advantageous offers. In the meantime, we will continue to offer and develop diverse, integrated ICT services for large, small and medium segment companies and the public sector,” he stated.
bite Latvija’s ambitious investment mirrors similar large-scale infrastructure projects underway in the United States, highlighting the global race to deploy advanced 5G and 5G+ networks. The improvements promise to significantly enhance the digital experience for Latvian citizens and businesses, setting a benchmark for other nations striving to achieve similar levels of connectivity.
