Bishops of Acapulco ask organized crime to stop abuses against the population – Diario La Página – 2024-02-22 04:17:58

This Sunday, the bishops of Acapulco urged organized crime to stop abuses against the population of Guerrero, amid an escalation of violence in that state.

Through a press release, they indicated that as members of the clergy they cannot remain silent but rather be the voice of the oppressed, the persecuted and the humiliated.

The bishops stressed the need for an environment free of intimidation and violence while ruling that “no one has the right to kill, sexually abuse, steal, lie or enslave.”

For this reason, they urged those who have made crime a lifestyle “to cease their abuses against people, families, towns and cities.”

Likewise, they urged the rulers to “avoid being overtaken by those who try to take over the spirit, the economic life and the future of the municipalities.”

Otherwise, the bishops warned, social discontent will lead people to assume roles that correspond to the forces of order.

On the other hand, they asked families to foster attitudes of peace among their members and “avoid joining the ranks of those who promote the culture of death.”

The call from the bishops of Acapulco occurs after four bishops from Guerrero held meetings with organized crime bosses to seek a truce in the entity.

Although the Church in Guerrero tried to mediate with the criminal groups, they refused to sign agreements as they were not willing to give up their territories.

Each of the bishops tried to convince the criminal groups that operate in their dioceses: in Acapulco Archbishop Leopoldo González González did it, in the Tierra Caliente region Bishop Joel Ocampo Gorostieta did it; in Tlapa, Bishop Dagoberto Sosa; and in the Central region, José de Jesús González himself, who pointed out that they will continue to dialogue with criminal leaders.
