Bishop and 2022 draft pick traded to Sabers by the Stars

Ben Bishop was traded from the Dallas Stars to the Buffalo Sabers on Friday, with Dallas getting future performances in exchange. Buffalo also received a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NHL draft.

Bishop announced on December 14 that his playing career was over after trying to rehabilitate a knee injury. The 35-year-old goaltender has not played in the NHL since the 2019-20 season and has one season remaining on his six-year, $29.5 million ($4.92 million average annual value) contract, which he signed on Aug May 12, 2017 signed with the Stars.

Bishop played three games for the Stars in their run to the 2020 Stanley Cup Finals and then missed the 2020-21 season after undergoing surgery on October 21, 2020 to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. He was placed on long-term injury reserve (LITR) to recover from surgery and the Stars’ general manager Jim Nill said in December Bishop would remain on LITR for the remainder of his contract.

Bishop was acquired by the Stars in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings on May 9, 2017. In 143 games (139 starts) with Dallas, he went 74-48-11 with a 2.33 GAA, 92.3 save percentage and 14 shutouts.

Bishop was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the third round (#85) of the 2005 NHL Draft and has 11 seasons with the Blues, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Kings and Stars with 222-128-36 streaks a goals-against average of 2.32, a save percentage of 92.1 percent and 33 shutouts in 413 games (397 starts).

In 52 Stanley Cup Playoff games, he had a 29-21 record with a 2.27 GAA, a 92.4 save percentage and five shutouts.

Dallas qualified for the playoffs that season, losing in the first round to the Calgary Flames in seven games.

Buffalo, who have missed the playoffs 11 times in a row, currently have three first-round picks in the 2022 NHL Draft: Nos. 9, 16, and 28.

The 2022 draft is scheduled for July 7-8 at the Bell Center in Montreal.
