The consideration of the case on charges of ex-Minister of National Economy Kuandyk Bishimbayev with the murder of his common-law wife Saltanat Nukenova continues in the Astana Municipal Court of Justice, the defendant is being interrogated about the day when Saltanat was killed, Orda.kz reports.
Court hearings in the Specialized Interdistrict Court for Criminal Cases of Astana are held with the participation of jurors. Judge Aizhan Kulbaeva presides over the trial.
For the first time, an online broadcast on YouTube from the courtroom was organized.
Kuandyk Bishimbayev is accused of murder committed with extreme cruelty (clause 5, part 2 of Article 99 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan), as well as torturing his common-law wife (clause 1, part 2 of Article 110 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan).
Also in the dock is Bishimbayev’s cousin Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, director of the Gastrocenter. He is accused of concealment (Article 432 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan) and failure to report a crime (Article 434 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan (“Failure to report a crime”).
Saltanat Nukenova was found dead on November 9, 2023 in the BAU restaurant in the capital. On the same day, Kuandyk Bishimbayev was detained on suspicion of murdering his common-law wife.
On March 11, 2024, preliminary hearings in the case began in Astana. Kuandk Bishimbayev and his lawyers insisted on having the case heard by a jury. The court granted their requests.
The main jury trial began on March 27.
