Divorces
In 2004, her marriage to film and TV producer Kaja Wolffers (50) ended after two years, who had left Birgit for writer Elle van Rijn. After some time, Birgit fell in love with film director Arne Toonen (48), whom she married in July 2008. A year later, son Chico was born. Birgit hoped to stay together with Arne forever, but they divorced in February 2019. The two had grown apart.
New love happiness
Barely a month later, Birgit appeared to have found new love with personal trainer Sander van Haarlem (36), with whom she had come into contact after he sent her an Instagram message. “I had just gotten divorced and was still very sad, especially because I could only see my child half the time,” Birgit says in Vriendin. But Sander made the sun shine again.
Guilt eldest son
Although a third wedding is not possible. Birgit was also not thinking about expanding the family. ‘It was not in line with my expectations, but Sander is younger and still wanted to have children, so it became a point of discussion.’ She had to think about it carefully, also because of her now 14-year-old son, who partly lives with his father. ‘How would Chico think? This child is with me all the time, for example. There was a lot of guilt behind that.’
