Bird Flu Outbreak Detected in France, Livestock Exterminated

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Plague bird flu reported on Sunday (20/12) has been detected at a duck farm in the Landes region, French. This location is the center of the production of a typical French food, foie gras, which is made from duck liver.

“The clinical signs were unmistakable and the decision was made to exterminate the cattle,” said Marie-Helene Cazaubon, Landes head of agriculture. AFP.

The culling was carried out on Saturday, the day after the bird flu outbreak was identified.

The local government is said to have created a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone around the farm.

This detection is called the second outbreak detected since last year’s major epidemic that already caused the culling of 2.5 million ducks and geese.

At the beginning of last month health authorities had asked farmers to confine their birds as a measure to avoid contact with migratory birds that may carry the virus.

“We are in an immigration corridor through which birds from northern Europe pass … and we have to be very vigilant,” Cazaubon said.

Cazaubon also explained that most of the ducks and geese had been culled for their fat as a popular holiday foie gras ingredient.

The tradition of eating foie gras is widespread in France, but has become controversial when ducks or geese are forced to become abnormally fat. About a quarter of the foie gras in France comes from Landes, which has 800 farms mainly of ducks.
