In the Lokers nature reserve the Molsbroek, the peak of bird flu infections seems to be over. 700 black-headed gulls did not survive the epidemic, about a quarter of the population in the area. Today some volunteers went back into the water to count and collect the number of carcasses. Only one dead seagull has been fished up. Specialists conclude that the worst is now over. Other bird species, such as ducks and moorhens, will be spared from the virus for the time being. The major culprit of recent months is the very deadly H5N1 type of bird flu for birds. A virus that does not affect humans, but experts do advise against touching sick and dead seagulls.
