Bird Flu Appears in Europe and Asia, Hundreds of Thousands of Poultry Exterminated

RADARSOLO.ID – The World Animal Health Organization (OIE) has received a number of reports regarding the emergence of bird flu cases in Europe and Asia in recent days.

Avian Influenza or more commonly known as bird flu is a type of flu that is highly contagious and affects food-producing birds, domesticated birds, and wild birds. Previous outbreaks have resulted in the mass culling of birds and restrictions on trade in some areas, Reuters notes.

This is a concern for epidemiologists related to the transmission of the virus to humans. China has reported 21 cases of the avian influenza subtype H5N6 found in humans this year.

In South Korea, it was reported that about 770,000 birds on a farm in Chungcheongbuk-do had the outbreak, citing reports from South Korean authorities. All animals that are still alive are also reported to be slaughtered to prevent the spread of the virus.

Also in Asia, Japan reported its first outbreak of winter 2021, at a poultry farm in the northeast of the country. The serotype of this plague is H5N8. In India, the Middle East has also reported several cases this year.

Meanwhile in Europe, the OIE said the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in the Rogaland region, Norway had infected approximately 7,000 birds. On Monday earlier this week, Belgium had called for keeping poultry in closed areas since reports of a highly contagious variant of bird flu found in wild geese around Antwerp. France and the Netherlands also took similar steps.
