Biontech develops vaccine against MS

Biontech also relies on mRNA technology in other research projects. According to the Mainz company, a possible mRNA vaccine approach against MS has already been developed. The first preclinical studies have been successful together with the University of Mainz.

In animal experiments, the mRNA vaccine was able to successfully stop the development of MS. Typical overreactions of the immune system, which are involved in the development of the autoimmune disease, could be prevented. The vaccine consists of a modified mRNA packaged in lipid nanoparticles. The RNA fragments must then be read from the ribosomes intracellularly in the body in order to produce the autoantigens relevant to the disease. These are presented on dendritic cells.

Autoimmune diseases such as MS result, among other things, from tissue damage by autoreactive T lymphocytes. The mRNA technology should lead to the fact that the body’s own reaction to the autoantigens does not occur. The technology’s approach expands a certain type of antigen-specific effector-regulatory T-cells – after vaccination, the body tolerates the self-antigens that have developed.
