Mainz (dts news agency) The medical company Biontech expects further adjustments to the corona vaccines. “The increased number of infections in the summer months indicates that corona infections can occur not only seasonally, but rather all year round,” said Biontech’s CEO Ugur Sahin to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ).
That is why it is necessary to adapt the vaccines every year and also to think about combination vaccines. “With Corona, we have arrived where we expected and what we called the new normal at the time. The virus is constantly mutating, similar to the flu viruses,” he told the FAZ.
Covid-19 continues to affect many people medically. “Infection rates have increased in recent months,” said Sahin. Most of those affected have mild symptoms. However, there are still more serious illnesses and hospitalizations due to Covid-19. “Long Covid is also an issue.” The medical need still exists. “To address it, however, we do not need scientific breakthroughs of a fundamental nature like at the beginning of the pandemic, but rather further development and fine-tuning as part of the product cycle.”
