1. Personal Life of Sunan Gresik

Sunan Gresik is said to still have blood ties with Maulana Ishaq (father of Sunan Giri) who is also a well-known scholar in the Islamic kingdom of Samudra Pasai. Sunan Gresik and Maulana Ishaq are both sons of a Persian scholar named Maulana Jumadil Kubro. If the genealogy is pulled up again, Mulana Jumadil Kubro is also the 10th descendant of Zainal Abidin bin Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

2. How to Da’wah Sunan Gresik

Maulana Malik Ibrahim or Sunan Gresik is one of the figures who “tripe alas” in spreading Islam in Java. The story and history of the preaching of Maulana Malik Ibrahim alias Sunan Gresik began when he first arrived in Gresik in 1404. At that time, Sunan Gresik arrived in the village of Sembalo, now it is the Leran area, Manyar District, which is 9 kilometers to the north of the city of Gresik.

Sunan Gresik traded in a port which is now known as the village of Roomo, Manyar.

From trading activities, Sunan Gresik’s opportunities in broadcasting Islam are increasingly wide open. Sunan Gresik interacts a lot with traders, ship owners or financiers. After his da’wah movement was sufficiently established, Sunan Gresik went to the capital city of Majapahit at Trowulan. The arrival of Sunan Gresik was welcomed by the King of Majapahit at that time. Even though it came to the end, the King of Majapahit remained unmoved by embracing Islam.

At the same time, Sunan Gresik also increased the number of pesantren he founded. At his pesantren, Sunan Gresik educated Islamic religious leaders in the future. That way, Sunan Gresik has given birth to scholars who in the future will become successors in spreading Islam.

3. Death of Sunan Gresik

Maulana Malik Ibrahim or Sunan Gresik spent much of his time preaching. There are many Islamic boarding schools founded by Sunan Gresik to teach Islam and expand its spread.

Until finally Sunan Gresik died on Monday, 12 Rabiul Awal 822 AD which coincided with April 8th. Sunan Gresik was later buried in
in Kampung Gapura, close to Gresik square and the Jami’ Gresik Mosque, East Java. Until now, the tomb of Sunan Gresik or Maulana Malik Ibrahim is still visited by many pilgrims who want to commemorate their services and look for karamah.
