Biography of Latvian artist Osis and his significant contributions

According to the archive of the LETA agency, Osis, born on October 4, 1943 in Kurzeme, graduated from the Department of Decorative Design at the Riga Applied Arts High School in 1963, and in 1971 he graduated from the Interior and Equipment Department of the Latvian State Academy of Arts (LVMA).

In 1975, Osis became a member of the Artists’ Union of Latvia, in 1978 – dean of the department of applied arts at LVMA, and in 1987 – assistant professor and vice-rector of LVMA. From 1997 to 2007, Osis held the position of LMA rector, and later headed the Academy’s Department of Environmental Art.

Osis painted mainly landscapes and portraits. His works were exhibited in art exhibitions both on the territory of the then Soviet Union and far beyond its borders, including in Italy and the USA. After regaining Latvia’s independence, the artist continued to participate in exhibitions elsewhere in Europe. There have been several personal exhibitions in Osim, Latvia. His works are in museums and private collections in Latvia, USA, Russia, Germany and Japan.
