Binjai Police Chief AKBP Rio Alexander Panelewan went viral when he knelt down asking the crowd not to judge or kill the arrested motorbike thieves. AKBP Rio said that at that time thousands of people gathered at the place where the motorbike thief was caught.
Reported detikNorth Sumatra, the incident occurred when a police officer caught the perpetrator trying to steal a motorbike. The perpetrator tried to escape and was finally arrested.
After being arrested, the perpetrator was taken into a minimarket while waiting for a pick-up car to be taken to the police station. That’s when the crowd who knew that a thief had been arrested gathered in front of the minimarket. As time went on, more and more people gathered.
“While the field team was waiting for the vehicle to be taken to the police station, the crowd grew bigger. Finally, the Criminal Investigation Unit arrested the perpetrator in the minimarket, the crowd got bigger. The crowd was already forcing their way in,” he said, Sunday (29/10/2023).
AKBP Rio also received a report from the police in the field regarding the condition. He came to the scene and saw that a crowd had gathered.
“That was to calm the crowd, there were a lot of requests, they asked to just kill the suspect, asked to be shot in the leg in front of them, we didn’t want that. That would violate procedure. I wanted to explain to the crowd, because I saw that if I was being calmed down the crowd “They didn’t see it. So, one of the people suggested that I ride (in the car) so that everyone could hear,” he said.
When he was in the car, Rio asked the public to calm down and let the perpetrator be taken away by police officers. After providing understanding for quite a long time, people finally began to calm their emotions.
“It took maybe an hour (to calm the crowd), after I could explain. It was indeed a scary time, someone said, the minimarket was just broken into, there was also language that the police were beaten, in the middle of the crowd like that there are sounds like that,” he said.
