The Eritrean runner, the first runner from black Africa to win a stage on a grand tour, had the misfortune to see the cork of a bottle of Prosecco explode in his eye on the ceremonial podium, which forced him to make a detour to the hospital in order to undergo additional examinations. Fortunately, the sprinter got out shortly after 7 p.m. and went straight to his team’s hotel. He will decide whether or not to continue the Giro after a night’s rest. On Wednesday, the peloton must reach Reggio Emilia.
