In the last week, there was rain distributed over the eastern edge of the Argentine agricultural area, which improved the condition of the wheat crop.
According to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, the area in fair to poor condition in the last week dropped from 16% to 10%.
“This improvement in conditions was mainly concentrated in the regions affected by the rainfall, where fertilization work is being resumed,” said the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange.
“However, those areas that did not receive any support continue to show delays in development and tissue damage due to the effect of low temperatures and signs of water stress that are becoming more pronounced as the weeks go by. In some sectors of the central-northern agricultural area, isolated foci of aphids are observed but without the need for chemical controls,” he added.
The cereal entity declared the sowing of the 1.30 million hectares of barley planned for the 2024/25 cycle to be completed, although there are still some plots to be sown in sectors of central Buenos Aires that would not modify the estimate.
“Low temperatures and moderate to no rainfall in key crop regions (south of La Pampa and Buenos Aires) continue to limit crop growth and delay development, with fields showing symptoms of stress due to water deficit, leaf damage and yellowing due to frost and uneven emergence. However, recent rains in sectors of the southeast of the agricultural area could bring improvements in the condition of the crop in the coming days,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the corn harvest for commercial grain reached 96% of the projected national area with the harvest completed in the northern core zone, where a yield of 103 qq/ha was recorded for early plantings, while the average yield of late plantings, due to water restrictions and the impact of Spiroplasma, only reached an average of 58.2 qq/ha.
“In the entire central-northern agricultural area, the late corn harvest has been brought forward, mainly due to the stress suffered during the crop cycle, with more than 98% already harvested and very variable yields, but low in most cases, except in the south of Córdoba, which has had results within the historical averages for the area,” the report noted.
“On the other hand, the harvest of late crops in the south of the agricultural area is progressing slowly, due to the high grain humidity that collaborators are still reporting, reporting an average zonal yield of 62.5 qq/ha. In this context, we maintain our production projection at 46.5 million tons at the national level,” he concluded.
