BIN Early Detects Terrorist Groups Close to the Taliban

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Deputy VII of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Wawan Hari Purwanto said that his party was conducting early detection of groups terrorist in Indonesia, which has close ideological and network Taliban.

This was done after the Taliban group controlled Afghanistan since the last few days.

“BIN together with the intelligence services are taking anticipatory steps by strengthening early detection and early prevention, especially for terrorist groups that have ideological closeness and networks with the Taliban,” said Wawan in his official statement, Thursday (19/8).

Wawan said that so far the movement of terrorist groups in Indonesia has been influenced by the development of the situation at the global and regional levels.

He gave an example when the ISIS group declared to create an Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2014. “At that time several Indonesian citizens were interested in becoming part of ISIS,” said Wawan.

In addition, Wawan also highlighted that the Taliban had promised not to disturb foreign diplomatic missions in Afghanistan. However, the Indonesian government continues to monitor the security situation in Afghanistan from day to day.

He ensured that so far the conditions of Indonesian citizens and Indonesian Embassy staff in Afghanistan were safe and sound.

“The safety of Indonesian citizens and Indonesian Embassy staff in Afghanistan is a top priority for the Indonesian government,” he said.

The Taliban group is known to have succeeded in occupying the Afghan capital Kabul and the presidential palace on Sunday (16/8). The President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, was also reported to have fled the country to avoid the bloodshed caused by the incident.
