Billions of liters of water seep into communities
Water is a precious commodity, and in view of climate change and increasing droughts, it is becoming more and more valuable. However, billions of liters of drinking water are lost in municipal pipe systems every year. They seep away, among other things because of holes and cracks in the pipes. The term “pipe network losses” lists the amounts of water in the water balances of the regional councils in Darmstadt, Gießen and Kassel that ultimately do not reach the consumer. In 2021, this totaled more than 25 million cubic meters – for everyone whose favorite subject at school wasn’t math: one cubic meter is 1,000 liters. That makes 25 billion liters.
The Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) in Hesse calculates that the water could fill the Kinzig Dam three and a half times or 168 million bathtubs. He is therefore calling on the regional president to take more active action against municipalities that have particularly high water losses in their pipe systems. The presidiums do not want to let the criticism of the municipalities stand. “Losses are not just pipe network losses, but also so-called “fake” losses, for example pipe network flushing, fire brigade or cemetery taps in the municipalities,” it says in Darmstadt.
