Billionaire Sentenced for Life for Killing a Friend To Shut Up His Wife

Suara.com – billionaire United States of America, Robert Durst, whose life story was made into a crime documentary series entitled The Jinx from HBO, has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murdering his best friend.

Court documents reveal that the real estate entrepreneur killed Susan Berman in 2000 so she wouldn’t talk to the police about his missing wife.

Susan Berman, who was 55 at the time of the incident, was found dead at her Beverly Hills home with a gunshot wound to the head. Police believe Durst killed two other people.

The public prosecutor called the 78-year-old a “narcissistic psychopath”. Durst denied killing his friend.

The sentence handed down by the judge prevented Durst from applying for parole. That means, there’s a high chance that Durst will die in prison.

Durst’s crimes, according to the jury’s decision, included killing Susan Berman and killing a witness.

Durst’s lawyer told the judge that his client intended to appeal. Durst himself only spoke to the judge once, namely when he said “Yes” when asked whether he was ignoring his right to appear in future trials.

At Thursday’s hearing, Susan Berman’s cousin Denny Marcus told the judge: “I lost … a truly extraordinary, brilliant and unforgettable person whose life was sadistically taken.”

Sareb Kaufman, who considers Susan Berman as his mother, said: “Not a single day in my 21 years has I not felt devastated, saddened, and hurt by [pembunuhan] this.”

“I have lost everything over and over again because of that man … I have lost and sacrificed more than anyone knows,” he continued.

“The murder of my mother and the events of the last 40 years will never go away from me. Are you satisfied, Bob?”

Robert Durst’s wife, Kathleen McCormack, was a medical student when she went missing in 1982. She is presumed dead.

“The only hope of penance you have now is to help find Kathy,” said Kaufmann, calling on Durst to reveal the location of McCormack’s body.

New York prosecutors are considering filing a lawsuit against Durst in McCormack’s disappearance, US media have reported.

Prosecutors allege that Durst actually killed three people. In addition to Susan Berman and Kathy McCormack, the other person killed was an elderly neighbor named Morris Black—who uncovered Durst’s identity in 2001 while he was hiding in Texas and pretended to be a mute woman.

Durst was acquitted of killing Black on the pretext that he was trying to defend himself.

Durst is one of the richest men in New York. His family is said to be the most powerful real estate dynasty.

His brother, Douglas Durst, testified in court saying: “He wanted to kill me”.

At the end of the documentary series The Jinx, Durst muttered to himself: “What the hell have I done? Killed them all, of course.”

Hours before the final episode aired in March 2015, authorities detained Durst in New Orleans on charges of murdering Susan Berman. The jury watched footage of the documentary before the trial began.
