MacKenzie Scott, the billionaire philanthropist whose fortune is tied to Amazon’s early days, has married Seattle science professor Dan Jewett, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing a person familiar with the matter.
Scott was previously married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, but the couple divorced in 2019 after 25 years of marriage.
Jewett is a science teacher at Lakeside, North Seattle’s upscale private school that is best known as the alma mater of Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen.
In a March 6 post on The Giving Pledge website, a site where the ultra-wealthy donate their fortunes to charity, Jewett writes on MacKenzie Scott’s page:
It is strange to be writing a letter stating that I plan to give away most of my wealth during my life, since I have never sought to gather the kind of wealth necessary to feel that saying something like that would have a particular meaning. I have been a teacher most of my life, as well as a grateful student of the generosity of those around me. This has meant doing everything possible to follow his example in passing on resources of all kinds, from time to energy and material possessions, when I have had them to give. And now, in a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know, and I have joined her in a commitment to pass on enormous financial wealth to serve others.
Scott, a novelist who met Bezos at the DE Shaw hedge fund in New York, is the 22nd richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $ 53.5 billion, according to Bloomberg.
In recent months, Scott has expanded his philanthropic giving. Last December, it pledged $ 4 billion to 384 nonprofits, educational institutions, and charities. At the time of the donations, he called the pandemic a “wrecking ball” for many Americans.
