Billie Eilish Worried About Olivia Rodrigo: Protecting Young Artists in the Industry

When Olivia Rodrigo broke through as an actress (High School Musical) and singer (Drivers License) Billie Eilish was worried about her younger colleague. She wanted to protect Rodrigo from harmful influences in the entertainment industry.

“When Olivia broke through, she was a neat little girl,” says Eilish in conversation with The Los Angeles Times back to Rodrigo’s first hit. “I was worried about her. I don’t know why, but I felt like I had to protect her.”

21-year-old Eilish, who also broke through at a young age, even wrote a song about what it’s like as a young girl in the industry. The song Goldwing is partly inspired by twenty-year-old Rodrigo. “It’s not just about Olivia, but I was thinking about her when I wrote it. She became famous at the time and is younger than me. That was the first time someone younger than me had a big breakthrough.”

The artist would prefer to protect all young singers who are breaking through. According to Eilish, the boys will be fine. “But I see myself in these young girls. I want to keep them all in a glass box so no one can hurt them.”
