Country singer Morgan Wallen came under fire in 2021 after a video was released of the singer repeatedly yelling the N-word at the camera. Now, a year after the fallout, Wallen returns to the stage in his first television appearance since the controversy at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.

Wallen shared his remorse for his racist outburst on Instagram following the incident. She acknowledged that she was learning about the consequences of his actions and how hurtful they were, and promised to do better in the future.
“Our actions matter. Our words matter. And I just want to encourage anyone watching to learn from my mistakes,” she said. “There is no reason to downplay what I did. It matters. And please know that I am carefully choosing my next step to repair.”
He also insisted that people not defend him for his actions. “I thank those who still see something in me and have defended me, but for today, please don’t do it. I was wrong. It’s up to me to take ownership of this. And I fully accept any sanctions that I face,” he concluded. “The timing of my return depends solely on me and the work I do.”
After a video of Wallen throwing the N-word at the camera was leaked, the singer was banned from attending or performing at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards. Although he did not attend, Wallen won three awards that night.
Morgan Wallen’s appearance at the BBMAs 2022 will be his first on-air performance
Wallen will return to the BBMA stage in 2022 for her first on-air television performance since the incident. He is nominated for four awards at the ceremony.
In a statement to Billboard, MRC, the company behind the BBMAs, explained why Wallen was invited back to the show.
“We oppose discrimination, harassment or racism of any kind,” the statement said. “We believe in treating everyone with dignity and respect. After extensive review and robust discussions internally and with the artist team, in which we found a continued and demonstrated commitment to meaningful work and outreach, we have extended an invitation to participate in this year’s show.”
Wallen will be joined by fellow artists Florence + The Machine, Mary J. Blige, Megan Thee Stallion, Burna Boy, Latto, Rauw Alejandro, Silk Sonic, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Maxwell.

Still, despite being kicked out of the BBMAs and drawing the ire of music fans around the world, Wallen’s career suffered little after the incident. your album Dangerous, released a month earlier, continued to dominate the Billboard 200 chart, spending ten weeks at No. 1 in total and becoming the best-selling album of the year.
