In most supermarkets, you don’t have to weigh fruit and vegetables yourself, the cashier will weigh the goods for you directly at the checkout. Unless of course you go to Billy. In some stores, the scales still remain. And customers are said to still be cheating.
“People often forget that, they get confused because it’s different everywhere. And then they don’t remember that they are in Bill, where they have to appreciate it. We do have an extra scale behind the cash register for the forgetful, but when someone has more types, it’s uncomfortable for me, for them and for the other customers standing behind them in the queue and waiting. Then there is another problem, for example, we have many kinds of apples and people don’t remember which kind they buy, so they either ask, which delays them again, or guess and then I have to run and consider it again,” an employee of one told us at the end of last year Billy branches.
By the way, we found twelve varieties of apples in the store. The cheapest costs 29.90 crowns and the most expensive 58.34 crowns.
They are now weighed directly at the cash register
Since the new year, some branches have also received and customers do not have to weigh the goods themselves. However, many of them did not find out about it, so they are still standing at the scales and are surprised that the label does not want to come off. The scales are only informative.
Saleswomen thus have to relearn the names of all apple varieties and other fruits and vegetables. “I’m a little confused about it, but it’s still the first week, I believe it will work out,” the saleswoman we spoke with told us.
And scams?
“Yes. Most often, we sold the cheapest apples, while I think there were many other types in the bag. I know that people also considered the goods and then threw in maybe one more piece. When there are ten onions in a bag, I don’t recognize that there are actually thirteen. And I had no way to verify it at the cash register, I would have to run to the scale with every item,” described the cashier.
Several times it happened that a customer who was adding goods to the one already weighed was caught in the act.
People cheat all the time
The editors wondered if people had a tendency to cheat, for example with the mentioned apples. But Billa did not want to comment within a few days.
A number of tricks to bypass the checkouts also exist at self-service checkouts. We have written about them several times in the past.
For example, one of the security guards of an unnamed supermarket in Prague described one of the tactics to us. According to him, some thieves often use a trick with a fruit or vegetable sticker.
“They let onions or whatever come out on the scales. Then they stick it on something more expensive, like coffee, and they pass the cash register. It’s often targeted by security now. We have already caught several of them,” the security guard described the trick.
Another fraud was described to us by a cashier from another chain, when a man bought plums and claimed he had plums in his bag. The price of blum ranges from sixty to eighty-two crowns per kilogram. Plums cost twenty-five to thirty-eight crowns.
