Bill Murray Defends ‘SNL’ and Hints at Hosting Return

As Saturday Night Live celebrates its 50th season,comedy legend Bill Murray ​has expressed his desire to return to the iconic sketch‍ show.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who was a cast member on SNL from 1977 ‍to 1980, told the New Heights podcast that he would ⁤”certainly” like to host an episode this season. Murray also defended the current creative team against criticism, stating that the show’s quality remains as high as ever.

“People always give me a hard ⁢time about,⁣ ‘Oh, the original show was so great and​ it’s‌ lousy now,’” Murray said. “And I say,‘No,it’s not.’ The show that’s on now, they do stuff that’s just as good as anybody ‌ever ⁣did,​ all the time.”

Before achieving stardom in films‍ like Caddyshack, Stripes, and Ghostbusters, Murray⁣ honed his comedic talents on‍ SNL, creating memorable characters like Dick Lanky, Francis Jocko Leary Jr.,and Honker. He has since returned​ to host the show five times.

“I told ’em I’d like​ to host one this year,” Murray revealed. “So, maybe if I get ‌organized. I think I did⁤ it two other times when I ⁢was there. I’d like to try it one more time. It might be the last time to try it.”

**Bill murray (BM):**‍ Well, _SNL_ is like family. It’s where I cut⁢ my teeth, learned the⁢ ropes of comedy. Fifty years,can you believe it? It’s a testament to the show’s staying power. And truthfully, they haven’t asked me ⁤back in⁤ a while, so I figured I’d remind​ them‌ I’m still around!



**WTN:** You’ve been critical of those who say‍ the show isn’t what it used to ‍be.Why are you so passionate about defending _SNL_?



**BM:** It’s just frustrating ⁣to ​hear folks constantly comparing ⁤the show ​to‌ “the⁢ good old days.” Look,every generation has its stars,its comedic voice. _SNL_ is constantly‌ evolving,embracing new talent,new styles of humor.



**WTN:** ⁤But don’t you think there’s something to be said about ⁤the golden age of _SNL_? ‌The original cast,the iconic sketches…



**BM:** Of course! ⁢That era was special, magical​ even. Butthey were pushing boundaries, breaking new ⁣ground back then. Today’s cast is⁢ doing the same thing, finding new ways to make us laugh, ⁢make us think.Maybe it doesn’t look the same,but the core values are still there: smart,fearless comedy.



**WTN:**​ Many fans ⁤would love to see​ you reprise some of your classic _SNL_ characters.Any chance of bringing back Nick the Lounge Singer, or maybe⁢ the wild-eyed Todd DiNiro?



**BM:** (Chuckles) Now you’re getting⁣ me excited!



**WTN:** Seriously, Mr.Murray, would you consider⁤ it?



**BM:** Let’s just say I wouldn’t mind dusting off the old fedora and shades. I still ⁣know how to ⁣make a martini and sing a‌ mean ballad.
