Mexico City /
Businessman Bill Gates foresaw that, after covid-19, the world will face another pandemic of a pathogen which will possibly be different from the coronavirus, for which he called on governments to invest in the development of vaccines.
“We will have another pandemic. It will be a different pathogen next time,” Gates said during his participation in the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany.
Regarding the current covid-19 pandemicGates indicated that the worst effects of the virus have faded as the immunity generated has reached large sectors of the world population.
Gates considered that the world should move faster in the future to develop and distribute vaccines, so he asked governments to invest in it now.
“Next time we should try to do it (develop vaccines), instead of two years, we should do it more like six months,” Gates said, adding that standardized platforms, including messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, would make it possible.
The businessman is promoting a book, in which proposes several actions to face the next pandemic and that the world does not suffer again what it suffered with covid-19.
“This is something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and covid has only made it clearer that the world must prioritize eliminating pandemics as a threat to humanity,” Gates explains on his website about his book.
In the book, which will be released in May, exposes the steps that can be taken not only to stop future pandemics but, in the process, to provide better health care for everyone around the world.
“I outline the lessons we can learn from this pandemic, the innovations we need to save lives, and the new tools we need to stop pathogens early and equitably.”
