In his annual blog post on Gatesnotes Bill Gates writes that the last two years have meant enormous technical steps for how we communicate. In three years, he therefore believes that the majority of all virtual meetings will take place in metaversum.
“In two to three years, I think most virtual meetings will be moved from 2D camera frames – which I call the Hollywoods Squares model, even though I know it reveals my age – to metaversum, a 3D space. with digital avatars “, writes Bill Gates and continues.
“There are lots of companies working on 3D avatars, and I recently had the opportunity to test some of their prototypes. I was super impressed by what I saw ”.
Like Meta (formerly Facebook), Microsoft is also working on several products for “the metaverse”.
At the same time, Bill Gates states that today not many people have VR glasses and control tools. Something that will slow down the transition compared to how the transition to teleworking could work because many already had some form of webcam. He writes that Microsoft is therefore currently working on a solution where a webcam can be used to produce an animated avatar.
Another challenge he writes is to develop technology that can create more spontaneity for virtual communication than is available today. Something that many noticeably lack from traditional office work.
