The Association for New Music organizes a birthday concert for and with drummer Bill Elgart. There will also be an accordion focus in the coming months.
The milestone birthday was already in November, but it’s only now being celebrated: With a special concert on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Ulm Society for Modern Music is honoring him on Sunday, February 19th, who has been in the city for many years Ulm living drummer Bill Elgart. The club has other plans as well.
Elgart has played with Carla Bley and Marion Brown, Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Mariano, Peter O’Mara and many others. In 1976 he came to Europe with Tom van der Geld and settled in Salzburg. Ten years later, in 1986, he then moved to Ulm and worked from there as a theater musician at the Munich Kammerspiele. Born in Cambridge/Massachusetts, Elgart still holds a professorship at the Würzburg University of Music. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Bill Elgart comes to a birthday concert with his current formation Common Ground in the Ulm town hall. Also present: saxophonist Sebastian Gille, Achim Kaufmann on piano and bassist Matthias Akeo Nowak. Start is at 7 p.m.
Accordion Focus Series starts March 6th
On March 6th, the Association for New Music will then start its main accordion series. The duo Matinier – Riessler comes to the Stadthaus. The Frenchman Jean-Louis Matinier plays the accordion, Michael Riessler the bass clarinet. There will be more accordion on May 18th, also with a duo. Gabriele Mirabassi and Simone Zanchini are guests with their new interpretation of the accordion and clarinet duo. The Vincent Peirani Trio will be playing on July 17th.
The Ralph Alessi Trio, on the other hand, manages without an accordion. Trumpeter Alessi, praised by the international media for his precision and technique, will come to Stadthaus on March 27th. Trumpeter Dave Douglas and Joey Baron are touring as a duo. They play in Ulm on April 19th. The concerts mentioned – except for Bill Elgart – start at 8 p.m. (fwo/AZ)
