Bill Cosby released: conviction for sexual abuse at…

83-year-old American actor and comedian Bill Cosby has been released from prison. He was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison in September 2018, but that sexual abuse conviction has been overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. American media reported that. His lawyer will pick him up from the prison “within this and a few hours”.

Bill Cosby has been behind bars for nearly three years for sexually assaulting Andrea Constand. Cosby was sentenced in September 2018 to between three and 10 years in prison. He was the first big name to be convicted in full #MeToo frenzy and chose to plead guilty to that prison sentence. He has since maintained that none of the allegations are true.

In total, dozens of women have accused the actor of sexual abuse, but in many cases the courts were unable to do anything with those accusations. That was because the abuse allegedly took place too long ago and was therefore time-barred. That was not the case for the abuse case involving Andrea Constand. Cosby could still be tried and sentenced for that.

His lawyers have appealed the conviction several times. They previously said that there were “immeasurable prejudices”, and after a new appeal in December, they have now been proved right by an appeal judge. It ruled that the actor and comedian did not receive a fair trial because a previous prosecutor had made a deal with Cosby not to charge him in this case.

Cosby must therefore be released immediately, the Supreme Court in Pennsylvania ordered. He will be released from prison today.
