Former US President, Bill Clintondirected his criticism towards the Republican candidate Donald Trumpwhile applauding the decision of the current president Joe Biden not to run for re-election, instead backing his vice president Kamala Harris as a Democratic candidate in the November elections.

In his speech during the Democratic National ConventionClinton, 78, cited her own age and compared it to Trump’s, noting that if the Republican were elected, he would be the oldest president ever to take office at nearly 79.

I’m the oldest man in my family by four generations, but I’m still younger than Donald Trump“Clinton said wryly.

The former president said Biden’s decision not to seek re-election would strengthen his legacy, highlighting the president’s courage and compassion.

I appreciate your courage, compassion, class, service and sacrifice.“I’m not going to be a president,” Clinton said, highlighting the contrast between Biden’s stance and Trump’s, whom she accused of being self-centered. She praised Harris as a leader with “vision, experience, temperament and the pure joy of doing something for others.”

“What does her opponent do? He talks about himself. It’s like the tenors who open before going on stage saying ‘me, me, me, me, me.’ When Harris is president, every day will start with ‘you, you, you, you, you, you,’” he said.

He said that in this election there is a “clear choice” between Harris, who looks out “for the people,” and “the other guy, who has shown even more than the first time that he cares about them and himself.”

The former president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosijoined in the endorsement of Harris, highlighting the achievements of the Biden-Harris administration and stating that the vice president is prepared to lead the country to “new achievements.”

“Our democracy is only as strong as the courage and commitment of those charged with its care. And we must elect leaders who believe in free and fair elections, who respect the peaceful transfer of power. The choice could not be clearer: those leaders are Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” he said, referring to the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Oprah Winfrey and other personalities, such as the composer Stevie Wonder and the singer John Legendshowed their support for Harris.

Winfrey, in particular, called on voters to choose “common sense over nonsense,” emphasizing the importance of defending freedom in a country that remains, in her words, a “work in progress.”

There are people who want us to see our country as a nation of us versus them, people who want to scare us, people who want to rule us, people who want us to believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe.that there is a right way to worship and a wrong way to love. People who seek to divide first and then conquer. (…) “Freedom is not free. America is an ongoing project. It requires commitment,” he said.

Winfrey also applauded Harris’s immigrant past: “Soon we will be teaching our children how this girl with an Indian mother and a Jamaican father (…) grew up to become the 47th president of the United States.”.

Harris is the first African-American woman and the first person of Asian descent to lead a ticket for one of the major US political parties.

Singer Stevie Wonder gave a brief speech before singing “Higher Ground,” to applause from the crowd, which also celebrated the participation of actors Mindy Kaling and Keenan Thompson.
