Bill Belichick’s Landing Spots: Legendary Coach Running Out of Options as Falcons Reach Deal with Raheem Morris

In a surprising turn of events, the Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement with Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris to be their new head coach. This news has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, as it directly affects one of the greatest coaches of all time, Bill Belichick.

Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots, had interviewed for the Falcons’ job and was considered by many to be the favorite. However, with the position about to be filled, Belichick’s options are dwindling. Only two head coaching positions remain open, and it’s unclear if either of them will be a suitable fit for the legendary coach.

Earlier this week, there were reports that multiple teams were quietly considering a potential run at Belichick. However, it seems that at least one of those teams has already hired a head coach, leaving Belichick with limited choices. So, what are his options right now?

One potential landing spot for Belichick could be with the Washington Commanders. They are one of the two teams still in search of a new head coach. The Commanders have an attractive setup with Josh Harris at the helm and Adam Peters as the new general manager. However, it appears that Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is the favorite for this job. Since his team is still in the NFC Championship game, he cannot make his way to Washington just yet. Additionally, reports suggest that Washington has shown no interest in pursuing Belichick. It would be surprising to see the 71-year-old coach end up in Washington.

The other team without a head coach is the Seattle Seahawks. According to NBC Sports’ report, there is speculation that the Seahawks could make a late push for Belichick. The Seahawks are an impressive organization with talented players on both sides of the ball. They have a strong quarterback in the reigning Comeback Player of the Year, a promising running back, and a solid defense. It could be an attractive job for Belichick, but it remains to be seen if the Seahawks would consider replacing their current head coach, who is 72 years old, with a 71-year-old.

Another interesting possibility is a former rival team, the New York Jets. The Jets had a disastrous season in 2023, and their head coach, Robert Saleh, has come under scrutiny. Despite losing Aaron Rodgers early in the season, the Jets’ performance has been far from impressive. Belichick’s experience and track record could make him an appealing candidate for the Jets. However, it’s uncertain if they would consider making a change at this point.

The Buffalo Bills, another team in the AFC East, could also be a potential landing spot for Belichick. Although they have been a strong team in recent years, they have failed to advance past the divisional round of the playoffs. Some speculate that they may have reached their ceiling under head coach Sean McDermott. The idea of Belichick facing off against his former team twice a year could be enticing for both him and the Bills.

On the other hand, there is a possibility that Belichick may choose to take a year off. While most 70-year-olds would consider retiring, it seems that Belichick is not ready to hang up his coaching hat just yet. He is only 26 wins away from tying Don Shula for the most regular-season wins in NFL history and 14 wins away from tying Shula for the most wins including playoffs. Belichick may choose to spend some time in Nantucket or serve as a consultant for Jerry Jones before taking over as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 when Mike McCarthy’s contract expires.

As the coaching carousel continues to spin, it remains to be seen where Bill Belichick will ultimately land. Will he find a new team to lead, or will he take a break and prepare for his next venture? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the NFL will be eagerly watching to see where the legendary coach ends up.
