The American gymnast Simone Biles and the Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis they are the AIPs (International Sports Press Association) Athletes of the Year 2024, voted by 518 journalists from 111 countries. Biles, who won three Olympic gold medals and one silver in Paris, scored 703 points and won the best female athlete of the year award for the fifth time, ahead of Spanish and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati (337 points) and to Saint Lucia’s first Olympic gold medal in the 100 meters and silver medal in the 200 metres, Julien Alfredthird with 263 points.
Duplantis gold and world record
After his record-breaking season, Duplantis also dominated the male athlete of the year category with 603 points. The Swedish star secured the prestigious award for the first time. Novak Djokovic, who at 37 became the fifth tennis player to reach the Career Golden Slam, finished second with 368 points, while Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar finished third with 294 points. Among the men he placed 8th Jannik Sinneralso preceded by Marchand (swimming), Vinicius (football), Alcaraz (tennis) and Yamal (football).
