Last week, the National Palace had as guests several of the highest level authorities of the government of the United States of America, among them the Attorney General of the Republic and the Secretary of Interior Security of the neighboring country.
The Government of Mexico attended the meeting headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Chancellor and all members of the security cabinet (Sedena, Marina, Segob, FGR, SSPC, among others). Among the topics on the agenda were the closure of the Mérida initiative, which at the time was part of the strategy of the “war against narco” that in the administration of Felipe Calderón, generated the equipment of the defunct Federal Police of Genaro García Moon.
The conclusion of the visit resulted in the generation of a new agenda that will seek to make the composition of the bilateral relationship more qualitative than quantitative, since it will seek that the previous Mérida initiative is now called: “Bicentennial Understanding.”
The topics that the “Bicentennial Understanding” will deal with are: Security, Public Health and Safe Communities. The Chancellor was very emphatic in saying: “We do not want helicopter gunships, firearms, to be sent to us.”
It can be said that, in general terms, what happened was something similar to laying the first stone in this new way of seeking dialogue with the neighboring country to the north, since the Chancellor placed -for example- an issue that for several years Some public servants refer and it is that the active extraditions of the Government of Mexico are not attended in the same proportions with the diligence and urgency that the passive extraditions that are processed by the Government of Mexico. In other words, international reciprocity was not being applied correctly and comprehensively. It will be necessary to see what is reflected and how the bilateral commitments with our commercial partner and neighbor to the north are fulfilled.
In form and substance, the signs that the President of Mexico is dealing with officials who are not his peers have many readings, but let’s leave it for another moment and be optimistic that it is the intention of being an attentive and interested host. occurs with arms trafficking and international cooperation processes.
