The marking work in Industriestraße decided by the city council and the upcoming traffic test in the section between Lessingstraße and Werner-von-Siemens-Straße are to be implemented before the end of this year.

In the run-up to the work, the city, in cooperation with Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, invites interested citizens to the “Bike-Friendly Industrial Road” information meeting on Saturday, September 9th. Together with the students of the university, the participants will be informed about the upcoming project at various stations via individual billboards. There is general information on local mobility, bicycle traffic facilities and protective strips and of course very specific information on the traffic test (reason, basis) along with planning. The joint attachment of planning elements with chalk spray (cross-section, arrangement of parking spaces), showing the so-called dooring zones and a short walk to particular problem areas in the street are also on the program. And if you want, you can try out the planned traffic routing with a bicycle/cargo bike. There will also be enough time for the participants for questions and discussions.

The information event will take place in the parking lot/green area on Industriestraße at number 20 (opposite Drinks Gotta) and will start at 11 a.m. The planned end is around 1 p.m.

“We cordially invite all residents and interested citizens to get an idea of the planned work directly on site and to use the opportunity for dialogue with colleagues from the city administration and traffic experts,” says Mayor Steffen Ball.

Previous measures not permanently successful

In the past, repeated attempts were made to guide cyclists onto or along the roadway safely and in compliance with the law. Unfortunately, these individual measures were not permanently successful. One of the main reasons is that Industriestraße has different roadway widths from Lessingstraße to the exit in the direction of Dietzenbach and thus the requirements for the minimum widths for pedestrians, cyclists and car/truck drivers as well as the corresponding design of the street does not do justice to the respective traffic area in large parts.

In the update of the cycle traffic concept, a marking plan was developed for the industrial road, which is intended to create safe cycling (cycle-friendly) and give all road users the opportunity to meet at eye level. The existing traffic area will not be changed, but will be redivided into sections of the road with a protective strip for each direction of travel and marked with pictograms in one section to protect cyclists. In addition, the permissible speed is limited to 30 km/h. In order to increase the protection for cyclists and to be able to rebuild them in accordance with the rules, different marking and structural variants are being implemented in the individual sections of the industrial road (different lane widths).

The markings on the Industriestraße from Lessingstraße to Werner-von-Siemens-Straße are to be tested for a period of one year in order to determine traffic behavior, road safety and the acceptance of road users – the result of the test is open. In addition to the marking work, the plans provide for the parking bays in the test section of the industrial road to be changed from perpendicular to parallel parking in order to reduce the potential for conflict and accidents for cyclists and pedestrians when parking in and out. The necessary approval of the Darmstadt regional council for the traffic test has now been obtained.
