The career of Arjen Robben is really on it now. The 37-year-old attacker himself announced this on Thursday. He calls the decision to quit “fair and realistic.”
Robben announced his return as a footballer out of the blue a year ago, having played his last game for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2019. However, the comeback of the 96-time international was disappointing: Robben was plagued, as so often during his career, by physical discomfort. He appeared more often at the end of the season.
“I have decided to end my active football career,” Robben said in a statement. ‘A year ago I announced my comeback as a player of Fc Groningen. I embarked on this adventure with great energy and enthusiasm. I only had to deal with physical setbacks quite quickly, which prevented me from playing matches for a long time. After a long road of trial and error I finally managed to play the last games of the season.’
“Looking back on the past season, I have to come to the honest conclusion that the number of match minutes was disappointing. I knew in advance that this could happen, but I took on the challenge and gave everything to make it work. And not just me, everyone within the club and in my immediate environment has helped and supported me at all times. The warm reactions and statements of support from all football fans did not leave me untouched. I am extremely grateful to everyone for this.’
‘I would like to thank all football supporters and enthusiasts for all the lovely warm support and sweet messages I have received over the past year. That was wonderful and heartwarming. I wish everyone and everyone a great football season when in full stadiums, but above all good health!’
Robben came to seven official games for Groningen after his comeback. His last appearance dates from May 19, in the play-offs against FC Utrecht. In his rich career, Robben also played for PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Dear football friends,
I have decided to stop my active football career. A very difficult choice. I want to thank everyone for all the heartwarming support!
