The meeting also mentioned efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.
Israeli media, Israel Hayom, said that one of the officers said that the date for ending the war in Lebanon was approaching.
“It may take several weeks,” the official said.
Then he emphasized, “The team [Israel] it will not be withdrawn until a resolution is reached which fulfills the requirements.”
That resolution is resolution 1701 of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The resolution stated that only the Lebanese army and peacekeeping forces should be sent to southern Lebanon.
In addition, the official explained that Israel’s close ally, the United States, supported the Netanyahu government to operate freely in Lebanon after the war.
Israel’s Channel 12 also reported a similar meeting. This media reports that Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is leading talks with the US government to secure a political agreement in Lebanon.
The proposed agreement includes a revised version of the resolution. In the new version, Israel wants a large multinational force to be deployed in southern Lebanon to prevent Hezbollah from approaching the border.
Lebanon’s interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati talked about a ceasefire before.
Mikati said that a truce between Hezbollah and Israel would be implemented in a matter of days, even hours. He is very hopeful that this will come true.
Lebanon’s PM also said a ceasefire was possible before the US held presidential elections on November 5.
At the same time, Hezbollah insists that it will accept a cease-fire
Since mid-September, Lebanon has become Israel’s battleground. During the operation they targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and civilian facilities. Israel and this militia are involved in fighting each other to this day.
