Big Friday Climate Conference in Leipzig: an estimated 15,000 participants

Leipzig – Today, Friday are in Leipzig no less than five meetings and elevators planned in connection with the global climate strike, nationwide there are more than 450. In the trade fair city, road users have to be prepared for numerous restrictions.

The following demos and the associated routes have been announced by the Leipzig Public Order Office:

1 pm to 1.30 pm: “Klimastreik” bicycle lift run by the Amnesty International city group with around 100 people.

Route: Karl-Heine-Platz> Karl-Heine-Straße> Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße> on the Elsterflutbett> Anton-Bruckner-Allee> Herzliya-Platz> Beethovenstraße> Straße des 17. Juni> Peterssteinweg> Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz> Roßplatz> Augustusplatz .

1.30 to 2.45 p.m .: BUND Leipzig’s “Bicycle feeder demo for the climate strike” bicycle lift with approx. 50 people.

Route: House of Democracy> Bernhard-Göring-Strasse> Arno-Nitzsche-Strasse> Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse> Peterssteinweg – Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz> Roßplatz> Goethestrasse.

2 to 9 p.m .: Elevator “# AlleFürsKlima – global climate strike from Leipzig for the climate” from Fridays for Future Leipzig with approx. 5000 people.

Goethestrasse, which runs from Augustusplatz to the main train station, will be kept free from 9 a.m. on Friday morning and will later be completely closed from 12 p.m. to around 4 p.m.

“The exit from the city center is guaranteed via Brühl> Goethestrasse> Richard-Wagner-Strasse,” said the regulatory office.

UPDATE, 4.45 p.m.: Elevator on the way towards Clara-Zetkin-Park

The elevator is on its way to Clara-Zetkin-Park as scheduled.

According to unconfirmed information from the organizers, 10,000 people are said to be on the streets. Other sources speak of 5000 to 6000.

UPDATE, 5.30 p.m.: Organizers speak of 15,000 participants

In the meantime, the organizers have increased their number of participants to 15,000. Originally only a third of that was planned.

Christoph Gerhards from the Scientific Association Scientists for Future said: “These elections are about voting out those who want to burn coal by 2038 and demolish villages.”

UPDATE, 9.45 p.m.: Demo ended

The “Fridays for Future” demo officially ended around 8.30pm in Clara-Zetkin-Park.

The number of 15,000 participants in Leipzig alone was confirmed once again, while across Germany there were 620,000.
