How the fire started is still unknown, but it is clear that the conveyor belt caught fire during the transport of coal. Because the fire only raged on the conveyor belt, it could be extinguished fairly quickly, according to the safety region.
‘Wrong place’
Bas van Orsouw happened to be in the vicinity of the steel giant and was shocked when he saw the thick clouds of smoke. “I was looking at tugboats and suddenly saw thick clouds of smoke on the Tata Steel site. There was a fire on the conveyor belt and then also at a tower,” he says. “I thought: ‘this is bad stuff’.”
“The smoke really went over the IJmond, but fortunately not to me. I think they let it burn out in a controlled manner, because the smoke had to go within twenty.”
