Kees van der Spek (60) is a lifesaver for many victims of fraud. However, in the latest episode of ‘Kees van der Spek Unmasked’, the victim does not seem to want to be saved. His brother, daughter and son are at the end – until a crazy twist happens.
“I’m now in huge debt. It’s an eye opener”
Kees is the last hope of Paul, Marilva and Ian, who watches helplessly from a great distance as an artist with their brother and father completely under his control. The man, who initially wants to remain anonymous, met Mariska two years ago through Facebook, who said she was in prison at the time.
Once he was free, the two met several times and she managed to convince the man to lend him tens of thousands of euros, with the promise that he would receive a large inheritance in the end . Euros he will never see again. But he doesn’t seem to want to realize that he’s been tricked.
Marilva, the victim’s daughter, describes how her father ‘very sweet, helpful’ came to communicate with the ‘wrong woman’. “Now I’ve lost it.” John, his son, has ‘almost no contact’ with his father anymore. “We miss him, we love him.” They don’t know at the moment that their father, who lives in Belgium, is in danger of going to the street because he is in big debt because of Mariska. His brother, Paul, says: “He borrowed so much money from friends and also from within the family. We are not sure of the total amount, but it is a large amount there.”
Kees travels to Suriname with Paul in the hope of freeing Mariska. They soon make a terrible discovery. It seems that Mariska is not only known to the Surinamese police as a notorious scammer, she was also imprisoned for the attempted murder of a child. Mariska’s mother’s former carer told Kees on the phone: “She had a baby. She put that baby in a backpack and threw it away in a gutter.” A bystander heard the baby crying. The baby is still alive and has been placed in a foster home. Story a Mariska’s mother can finally prove herself to Kees.
“This woman is no joke,” Kees concluded. When he and Paul confront Mariska after the car chase, she flatly denies being guilty of all of the above – except drug dealing. She runs away, but when they talk to Paul’s brother on the phone a little later, they suddenly hear her voice in the background. “The family needn’t worry about me,” the man assures Kees. “I’m a sixty-year-old man, aren’t I.” With that his brother ‘ try to convince him again about Mariska’s dark dealings: “We want to help you.”
The section of Kees van der Spek Unmasked there seems to be a bad result. In addition, Kees and Paul receive serious threats from Mariska, who says through voice messages that she will set their car on fire if they are not careful. But then a big twist happens in the story. They managed to wake up the victim, named Wilgo. After watching the program, he has come to his senses and even wants to tell his story in front of the camera.
“Things are better now. At first I didn’t want to believe it,” said Wilgo, who has actually been evicted from his home and is living with an acquaintance. “I think it’s a good thing that the images were put on me, because I didn’t know it was that intense.” He says he has lost 47,000 euros, which you can buy him a house in Suriname, to Mariska. “I am now in great debt. Yes eye opening.” He also tells how he even caught Mariska doing voodoo on him.
Although he asked Kees and his brother to leave him alone, he is very happy that they will continue with the investigation. “Otherwise I might still be in that position.”
Kees van der Spek Unmasked can be seen every Monday at 8:30 pm on RTL 5 and can be seen again on Videoland.
