Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A number of big brands have stopped advertising spending on social media X, previously known as Twitter. The advertiser exodus began last week due to concerns about antisemitism and hate speech on Elon Musk’s social media platform.

Fox Sports, Ubisoft, Axios, TechCrunch, and Paris Hilton’s 11:11 Media all said they had halted their ad spending on X, joining other major advertisers who did so last week.

The ongoing advertiser exit marks a deepening crisis for X, which has struggled since Musk’s takeover last year. This happens as more and more X users switch to alternative platforms, one of which is Meta X’s Threads.

“The latest revolt began last week when IBM said it had suspended advertising on 2023).

“IBM’s decision also comes after Musk openly supported antisemitic conspiracy theories in a post on X earlier this week.”

On Friday, many major media brands including Disney, Paramount, Comcast, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal and CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery followed suit without detailing their reasons for stopping advertising on X. Apple also reportedly pulled its ad spending on X this week. Then.

X on Monday filed a lawsuit accusing Media Matters of misrepresenting how likely it was for ads to be shown alongside extremist content on the site.

X also said they had made pro-Nazi accounts identified by Media Matters ineligible for monetization, meaning ads could no longer run on their pages.

But the company has done little to assure advertisers its platform is safe.

The pro-Nazi accounts identified by Media Matters remain active on the site, along with other far-right and white supremacist accounts, some of which Musk has reinstated on the platform following his takeover.

However, some advertisers continue to use X despite concerns about hate speech.

The National Football League, one of the platform’s largest advertising partners, said it has repeatedly expressed concerns about hate speech to X’s leadership directly, although it has not pulled its ads from the platform.
