In the Netherlands, after the collapse of the Big Bazar bargain chain in September 2023, the parent company has now been declared bankrupt. The stores in Belgium are in critical reorganization mode. Big Bazar has three other Limburg branches: in Lommel, Lanaken and Tongeren.
The news of the break has been confirmed by one of the curators who have to settle the break to the Dutch channel RTL.
The series of deals collapsed in September after months of litigation from affected creditors. The company had over 100 stores and 1,300 employees.
At the time, the parent company stayed out of bankruptcy, until now. The judge declared Big Bazar Holding bankrupt last week, says RTL. “There were many creditors, but until now no one had filed for bankruptcy of the holding company,” said curator Wybe Mollema.
In the meantime, the Belgian chain Big Bazar, which according to its website still has eight stores, three of them in Limburg, is also in trouble. The company is in legal reorganization mode.
After the breakup of the chain in the Netherlands, the Belgian stores were taken over by management in Belgium. With the legal reorganization, Big Bazar Belgium is temporarily protected from creditors and has time to develop a rescue plan.
According to RTL, the bankrupt estate of Big Bazar in the Netherlands still owes one million euros from the Belgian company. “This relates to stores that were delivered by the Dutch company to the Belgian company, but were not paid for,” said the guardian. (b)
