The soloist Aija Vītoliņa will take part in the concert program, the works of the finalists of the “Big Band Composition Competition for Young Composers of the Baltic and Nordic Countries” jointly organized by the Jāzeps Vītolas Latvian Music Academy (JVLMA) and the big band will be performed, as well as the new songs from Andras Buiķs’ program “Sajust grūva!”
This is already the fourth year that the Big Band Composition Competition for young composers from the Baltic and Nordic countries, jointly organized by JVLMA and Latvian Radio Big Band, is taking place. This year, it received dozens of works from Lithuania, Latvia, Norway and Sweden. In the semi-final competition of the competition, three finalists and works were determined, which will be announced on the evening of November 30.

At the concert, we will hear the work “Prologue” by the representative of Latvia, Anna Vibes-Gorkuša, as well as the young Norwegian composer Peter Robertstad (Peter Robertstad) and Michael Dala Amundsen (Mikkel Dahl Amundsen) compositions “Equilibrium” and “Going”. The organizers of the competition emphasize that this is an opportunity for young composers to express themselves artistically and be heard on a large scale, and they are also offered an excellent platform for realizing their ideas and improving their skills. A soloist also participates in each competition, and this time it is vocalist Aija Vītoliņa.
The concert will also feature Andras Buiķs’ concert program “Feel the Groove!”, prepared especially for the Latvian Radio big band. The project is rich in harmonies, experimental and technically challenging, especially for a big band, but does not deviate from the classical values of jazz and rhythmic music. The songs written by Andras Buiķa are sung by Aija Vītoliņa with the words of various Latvian poets.
Kārlis Vanags says about the concert: “In addition to the works of the contestants’ finalists, the program will also feature several innovative jazz standards, as well as the new songs of Andras Buiķs and Aija Vītoliņa. Aija Vītoliņa is also the special guest and soloist of this year’s competition. This concert program was created without forgetting the basic idea of the competition, which is creativity and an original approach.”
