The European Parliament has said it will try to recover money from French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen over allegations of fraud, AFP reported, citing a French investigative journalism platform.
The information shows that the European Anti-Fraud Office has accused Marin Le Pen and three other former MEPs, including her father Jean-Marie Le Pen, of misusing European Parliament funds.
The report alleges that Le Pen personally misappropriated around 137,000 euros in public funds from the parliament in Strasbourg for staff and events, while she was a member of parliament between 2004 and 2017.
According to a source in the AFP, OLAF will seek a total of 617,000 euros from stakeholders in the coming weeks.
Le Pen’s lawyer told the agency that the investigation had been launched since 2016 and that Le Pen had been questioned in March last year.
According to Reuters, French prosecutors are also examining the OLAF report.
