Biennale Arte, Tusk’s government withdraws nationalist Czwartos’ project for the Polish Pavilion

As the new edition of the Biennale Arte approaches, which will open in Venice on April 20th curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the various countries invited to participate with their national pavilions are presenting their proposals. The new Polish government, led by the centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk, decided at this juncture to withdraw the project that was supposed to represent Poland in Venice, and to replace it with another.

“My Biennial for foreigners of the world”

Dario Pappalardo

The original project, decided in the last days of the previous nationalist-populist government led by Law and Justice, was in fact composed of 35 works by the artist Ignacy IV by title Polish Exercises in the Tragedy of the World: Between Germany and Russia; curated by Piotr Bernatowicz and Dariusz Kar?owicz with the participation of Ignacy Trzecios, Czwartos’ selection, included a painting depicting Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin connected by a flaming saltire in the shape of a swastika.

To replace the works of Czwartos, who accused the Polish Ministry of Culture led by Bart?omiej Sienkiewicz of censorship, declaring Art Newspaper that “the selection was carried out according to legal procedures”, will be a video by the Ukrainian art collective Open Group. Titled Repeat After Me, the documentary film is constructed through interviews with displaced people from different regions of Ukraine, who evoke their perception of the war through the sounds they remember. Karaoke-style video segments encourage visitors to recreate the sounds of air raid signals, bombings and various types of weapons. Originally filmed in a refugee camp in Lviv, the video installation was presented for the first time at Labyrinth Gallery of the Polish city of Lublin in 2022.
