In the third meeting between SC Bern and EHC Biel this season, the Seelanders won 4-3 after extra time.
The Seelanders, who are in a bit of a crisis, start the game quite well, but act according to the motto “Defense First” and so the flow of the game is somewhat slow. After the first mutual feeling-out, a little more life came into the game and the hosts took the lead after exactly 12 minutes through Dino Kessler, who was somewhat forgotten in front of the Bern goal. But Bern got back into the game before the break. Thierry Bader, who came back from injury, equalized in the 18th minute.
Little changes in the game in the second third either, with inaccuracies in passing preventing great scoring opportunities on both sides. But the people of Bern didn’t need too many chances to score a goal that evening either. Thierry Bader scored his second personal goal midway through the game, receiving an exemplary pass from Tristan Scherwey in front of the goal. Since Biel continued to miss the best chances and SCB goalie Adam Reideborn was always at the top of his game, the Mutzen went into the second break with a narrow 2-1 lead.
At the beginning of the third period, the Bernese team failed to make a preliminary decision in the power play, much to the delight of the fans in the sold-out Tissot Arena, who were able to celebrate their team’s equalizer to make it 2-2 a short time later. However, the cheers quickly died down again because 43 seconds later the Bernese team took the lead again through Fabian Ritzmann. And once again Biel couldn’t be shaken off and scored a lucky equalizer in the 52nd minute. Roman Loeffel deflects a pass from Bachofner into his own goal. A little more than three minutes before the end, the scene that ultimately decided the game took place when Tristan Scherwey had to go to the penalty box for five minutes for an elbow check on Dino Kesser. A harsh penalty against the Bernese, considering that Kessler wanted to check Scherwey from behind and hit the (too) high elbow. Jussi Tapola’s team still survives the regular playing time, but after 27 seconds of Indian overtime, Haetan Hass decides in Biel’s favor.
It continues tomorrow, SCB welcomes EV Zug at home. This will be followed by a 10-day national team break before the game continues in Geneva on Tuesday, December 19th, 2023. Two days later the last home game of the year against Ajoie takes place and one day before Christmas Eve the Mutzen visit EHC Kloten.
