Biel Dominates TV Appenzell in Handball Barrage Game: 24:30 Victory

A mortgage at halftime: TV Appenzell loses the first leg against Biel 24:30

In the fight for promotion to the National League B, the handball players of TV Appenzell suffered a setback on Thursday evening. HS Biel dominated the first game in the Barrage right from the start and thus significantly limited Innerrhoder’s chances for the second leg on Sunday.

It is by no means the case that the Appenzellers have to travel to Biel with their heads hanging down after the defeat. They did what they could in the first barrage game. But despite all their desire, they simply didn’t fully utilize their possibilities. With more luck in the deals and minimizing the technical errors, more could have been achieved.

Biel quicker in the game

Martin Geisser, chairman of the handball team, kicked off the game, which was played in a fair setting – it was led by the NLA referee pair Gallardo/Gallardo – with the recognition of Sven Sutter, Dano Waldburger, Ramon Hörler and Thomas Loser, who are retiring from active handball. Secretly, many of the more than 400 people watching probably hoped that it wouldn’t be the last home game for those who said goodbye with much applause.

But it soon became apparent that HS Biel found its way into the game quicker; The guests immediately took the lead and only had to give up the lead once at 4:4. Who knows if Innerrhoder’s two attempts in the initial phase hadn’t crashed into the rafters… So the TVA constantly chased after a deficit without being left behind. The opponent remained within reach at the break.

The lack of long-range shots

In the first ten minutes after the restart, things began to turn in favor of the Zealanders. Brought into high gear by U21 international Leo Schnyder, who also plays for BSV Bern with a dual license, the Biel team increased their score to plus six goals by the 45th minute. Goalkeeper Flavio De Carli prevented anything worse with several saves.

The TVA coaching team Christian Hamm/Andreas Wild then ordered Schnyder and Schläfli to be man-marked, but this failed to have a decisive effect, as did the substitutions in the build-up line. The goal gap no longer shortened significantly. “We lacked shots from distance. And the number of technical errors was simply too high compared to that of the Biel team,” said both Christian Hamm and Lucius Graf, who was forced to take a break due to injury, as the main reasons for the defeat. But both also agreed that everything is by no means lost: “We are only in the Barrage half-time.”

The TVA will play the second leg on Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Gym Seeland hall. If the Innerrhoders can still turn the tide, a double round will follow with the winners from the other two barrages.
