Thursday morning. 10 O `clock. Tissot arena. Biel sports director Martin Steinegger informs his team that the season is being canceled due to the Corona crisis. Some go on ice one last time. With you? Coach Antti Törmänen. The Finn lies flat four days later. Diagnosis: coronavirus!

The 49-year-old can be tested on Saturday after feeling pressure on his chest and having a fever. A day later, he receives the diagnosis. Törmänen informs its players via team chat. The team then receives instructions from the club doctor to stay at home. “The players are not under quarantine,” said Steinegger. «For them, what should apply to all people applies:‹ Stay at home! ›Those who complain about symptoms, anyway. We currently have nothing to do anyway. »

Also infected video coach?
Steinegger had no contact with the trainer on Monday. Managing Director Daniel Villard says: «Antti is currently at home and has symptoms like the usual flu. He has a fever and body aches. » His wife Minna (48) and Törmänen’s children Aaro (18) and Henrik (10) are not expected to show any symptoms yet.
–
The sports director, who also stood on the ice with goofies on Thursday, has so far not complained of symptoms. He isolates himself at home. For this, video coach Thomas Zamboni (33) – he was sitting in the same office with foolish people – complained about fever on Monday. It is still unclear whether he also has the corona virus.
–
The EHC Biel, on the advice of the doctors, refrained from testing the players as a precaution. «It doesn’t work. If the test turns out to be negative, you can only imagine that you are in false security, ”says Steinegger. It is not clear how long the incubation period, i.e. the time between the infection and the appearance of the first symptoms, lasts. In most cases it is five days. However, it can take up to 14 days.

“Maybe infected while shopping”
“We have no symptoms, but maybe in a few days,” says retiring Captain Mathieu Tschantré. «It could be that Antti is not even the reason for it. Maybe someone infected us while shopping at Migros. If Antti had known that he was infected, he would surely not have come to the ice rink. There’s no point speculating. »

CEO Villard says: “It is logical that hockey teams are hit when so many people in the country are sick. One is already worried. It doesn’t leave anyone cold. »
–
Foreigners have already left
For Tschantré it is clear: «Everyone has the same responsibility towards their fellow human beings. The doctor advised us to stay at home. For our own safety and to minimize the risk of infection. It’s easy for us. We have nothing more to do. People who work in the health sector do not have this option. »

EHC Biel sent its foreign players back home as a precaution last weekend.
