Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President of the United States (US) Joe Biden said that his party would be careful in including Ukraine in the NATO defense alliance. This came as Kyiv was seeking to enter into the defense pact, which Russia opposed with repeated attacks on its territory.

Before embarking on a tour of Britain and Lithuania, Biden made it clear that adding Ukraine to NATO would bring the alliance into direct conflict with Russia. It is known, there is one rule that says an attack on one of the NATO members is an attack on all of them, and currently Ukraine is at war with Moscow.

“I don’t think there is unanimity in NATO about whether or not to bring Ukraine into the NATO family right now, at this moment, in the middle of a war,” Biden said in an interview with CNN International quoted ReutersMonday, (10/7/2023).

Biden’s statement was made when NATO will hold a Summit (Summit) in Vilnius, Lithuania, on July 11. During the meeting, the Western defense pact will discuss Ukraine’s membership proposal

Zelensky said an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO would send a message that the Western defense alliance is not afraid of Moscow. Zelensky even said he would be in Vilnius for the meeting.

“I will be there and I will do whatever I can to, so to speak, expedite that solution, to come to an agreement with our partners,” Zelensky said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Meanwhile, another item on the agenda that will be discussed at Biden’s meeting with other NATO leaders in Vilnius is the Swedish membership proposal. So far, the proposal has been rejected by two members, namely Hungary and Türkiye.

In its rules, the approval of NATO membership for a country must have the support of all existing members.

“Biden discussed Sweden’s NATO offer by phone with President Erdogan, and expressed his desire to welcome Sweden into NATO as soon as possible,” the White House said in a statement on Sunday.

“President Erdogan told Biden that Sweden should do more to detain supporters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which it regards as a terrorist group and which continues to hold demonstrations in Sweden,” the Turkish presidency said.
