They later said, “The US vehemently rejects any unilateral attempt to change the status quo or undermine the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.”

Biden and Xi Jinping previously had a phone conversation for two hours and 17 minutes on Thursday (28/7).

During the talks, Xi warned that the Biden government should not play with fire on the Taiwan issue.

“Public opinion should not be violated, and if you play with fire, you will burn. I hope the US side can understand this message clearly,” Xi said.

A US administration official also said Biden and Xi’s discussions on Taiwan were “frontal and honest”.

However, he sees Xi’s warning as a standard for China’s leadership.

The phone call between Xi and Biden took place at a time when tensions between the two countries were heating up, especially after it emerged that the US House of Representatives, Nancy Peloci, was visiting Taiwan in August.

China has repeatedly warned about the visit. According to them, the visit will disrupt relations between the two countries.

Inside the US itself, a number of White House officials secretly intercepted Pelosi’s plans to Taiwan.

They fear this visit will increase China’s aggressiveness to the island.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense is preparing Pelosi’s travel scheme to Taiwan. In that plan, they might deploy ships and planes.

US officials are also concerned that there could be miscalculations, incidents or accidental accidents if Washington and Beijing step up air and maritime operations in the region.
