Biden’s remarks came after Republican critics denounced the billions of dollars in arms shipments and money transfers authorized by his government.

He also responded to allegations by some Republican lawmakers that US aid to Ukraine had been excessive.

“And anyway, we didn’t give Ukraine a blank check. There are many things Ukraine wants us not to do, “he said, noting that Kiev had asked American planes to defend its skies.
“I said: ‘No, we will not. We will not enter a third world war, we will take a Russian plane and we will be directly involved.”
He added that Washington had also rejected some long-range weapons.
“I don’t want them to start bombing Russian territory,” he said.
Ahead of this week’s mid-term elections, Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy promised that Kiev would no longer accept “blank checks” if his party hired Congress.
